Scleral Lenses for Dry Eye in Southfield, MI.

Optometrist, Man rubbing eyes in Lathrup Village, MI,

Dry eye patients have been experiencing tremendous relief by wearing a technically advanced contact lens, called a scleral lens. It has a special design to keep the eye always moist and has the comfort of a soft contact lens. The eye bathes in a liquid underneath the contact lens. As a result, the eye always feels moist and comfortable.

Scleral lenses give very clear vision allowing patients to see 20/20. Patients with prescriptions needing astigmatism and even bifocals can wear a scleral lens, eliminating the need for glasses altogether.

Patients with extreme dry eye, such as from Sjogren's Syndrome, Thyroid Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes, Lupus, Graft vs. Host Disease, and Cancer Radiation Treatment can have extremely dry eye and the scleral lenses have returned their eyes to feeling normal again.Dr. Sobel explains " Patients are so excited to have finally found relief after all other treatments have fallen short."Dry eye patients tend to have red, irritated, dry eyes or even watery eyes and the scleral lens makes their eyes feel normal again.

Depending on the medical condition causing the dry eyes, Medicare may cover the scleral lens fitting and lenses, but you will still be responsible for paying the co-pays and deductible. Medical insurances sometimes will cover the scleral lenses for dry eye depending on the medical condition and plan coverage. Our office can find out if your insurance will cover the fitting fees and lenses.
